Is the Internet causing my ADD?

I am a 39 year old man. It might be strange to talk about ADD at this age, but I just realized that I might have had ADD for a long time. Here is what I experience:

I work mostly with computers. I usually have 10+ browser windows open with sites and pages that are both related and unrelated to work. I have facebook, twitter, google, espn, a stock market site, etc. etc. all open at the same time. While working, if I see something that interests me, I "chase" that topic through search, social networks, etc. and EASILY get distracted away from my tasks at hand.

This is obviously affecting my work performance, and I would like to correct this behaviour. Any thoughts or recommendations on what I need to do? Do I need to see a therapist?

While most common among children, there is no "age limit" for attention deficit disorder (ADD). Having said that, I would leave it to experts (i.e., psychologists) to diagnose what you are experiencing.

In terms of Internet being a big distraction, that clearly seems to be more common since the proliferation of social networks. My recommendation is to see if you can limit your use of Facebook, Twitter or any other such sites to once or twice per day at a set time. How about first thing in the morning or just before you go to sleep? Unless you need these sites for work (which it doesn't sound like you do), see if you can exercise self control with a set schedule and explicit plan.

If you find yourself not being able to limit yourself and continue to experience difficulty focusing, give your local psychologist a call. Good luck.
